Document Summary

Emerged after the first great debate during the 30s and 40s. Taught to focus on interests instead of ideals, peace through strength, and that powers can coexist even if they have opposing values and beliefs. Has roots with thucydides, machiavelli, thomas hobbes and rousseau. Reason of state : how to protect the state, raison d" tat. The survival of the state is never guaranteed. Skeptical of universal morals and thusly doesn"t include them. Dual moral standard: there is a separate set of standards for domestic and foreign policy. State the principle factor in international affairs. There is a sense of anarchy overseeing all of the states due to lack of central authority. Domestically there is a power though in the form of a hierarchy: survival. Countries strive to success but the power of the state world-wide will account for if they will survive: self-help. Everyone is responsible for their own survival and you can"t just call for help.
