POSC311 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Nationstates, Racial Hierarchy

30 views2 pages

Document Summary

Political economy usually the only thing focused on when looking at colonialism: its draw-backs: Says colonial cultures not grounded in history. Says colonialism is the start of history for these societies. Culture comes from politics and culture: the states of africa are collapsing but these states that are collapsing are the colonial states so true african states can form. Violence does not just come from cultural differences: violence only due to colonial boundaries is an old idea held by pan-africanists. All boundaries are artificial: change in finance = change in boundaries. The idea that all countries should be nation-states is ridiculous: don"t need to worry so much about lines and worry more about the institutional legacy of colonialism. Ethnicity debate: race used as a hierarchy to civilize , split up the state into races and ethnicities. Race: governed through civil law and part of society. Language rights, traditions, etc: split up natives from non-natives.
