Hist 2112 - chapter 25: the civil rights movement. The legal approach to civil rights: law was the keystone of segregation. First priority was to get rid of segregation in education because teaching it breeds it. Brown v. board, 1954: warren supreme court overturned plessey v. ferguson and ordered desegregation with deliberate speed : massive resistance to integration from many state leaders, including georgia"s governor. Vandenburg - we shall not be moved: school choice: gave students their choice of school in the district, creating voluntary segregation, segregation academies: rise of private schools which blacks could not afford. Montgomery bus boycott: rosa parks + naacp; economic pressure effective at ending bus segregation: debut of martin luther king and the southern christian leadership conference (sclc) Sit-ins: created emotional images as blacks acted nonviolently, even though they were being beat up - document 25. 4: more emotional images which put pressure on the liberal government to act: birmingham protests, freedom rides w/ klan violence.
