Chapter 13: physical and cognitive development in early adulthood. Primary aging- (senescence)- age related physical changes that have biological basis and are universally shared and inevitable. Secondary aging- age related changes that are due to environmental influences, poor health habits, disease, ex. Growth spurt in frontal lobes: logic, planning, emotional, control (21-22) Peak in brain happens in mid/late 20s. Response inhibition- keep yourself from responding too quickly to the options. Limbic system- part of the brain that regulates emotional responses. Loss in dendrites and slowing of firing rates. Maximum oxygen uptake (vo2max)- reflects the body"s ability to take in and transport oxygen to various parts of the body. Age is associated with arterial elasticity and calcification of valves that regulate blood flow. Age related declines can reflect sedentary lifestyle. B cells- fight against external threats (virus and bacteria) Linking exercise, not smoking, drinking, over/under eating, snacking, sleep. Poor health habits puts you at risk for early death.
