EDR 335 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Note-Taking, Brainstorming, Melodic Pattern
Document Summary
Music has the luxury of having the same student four years. Meaningful education requires material to be revisited. Our brains filter out useless information so we must keep reintroducing concepts. Watching a performance that is only decoding is uninspiring. Attention: draw attention to a specific senses through motion, size (large vs. small), intensity (bright v. dull), novelty (uniqueness and cleverness), incongruity (nonsensical), social cues, and connection to personal. Long term memory requires less attention and is more automatic. Can be held for longer periods of time as they are processed and reinforced. Once attention is focused, rehearsal is needed to maintain memory. Hook important skills through clever sequencing and engaging instruction. More competence usually leads to more intrinsic motivation. Parallel to reading: find the main idea, sequencing, summarizing, making predictions, using imagery, retelling, writing. In order for understanding to grow, learners must directly interact through performing, listening, creating, or a combination of these acts.
