Independence: rebuilding of jerusalem, roman power dominated palestine. Domination: herod the great: efficient leader and politician had many jews slaughtered. Summary: many leaders tried to force greek culture onto the jews some of them complied while others did not. Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed, the jews tried again and were crushed again. Demography: many gentiles lived in parts of palestine. Latin was the legal language of the roman empire. Limited resources made it hard to learn to read and write.
