RCSSCI 220 Chapter 1: Social Inequality
Document Summary
Equal rights and opportunities do not destroy inequality. People are grouped around the center of their own activity . Example: people form groups around their professions (teachers, factory workers, etc. ) Equality means the various opportunities open to us. People have different strengths (personality, intelligence, athletic ability, etc. ) They use these strengths to trade or acquire things they would like. Example: a social person would be able to acquire a sales job more easily than an introvert who couldn"t overcome their social reclusion. There are therefore inequalities established at birth. Those with superior mental, physical, moral standing etc. still have to supply some effort. However, many things in life will be easier for them. Ethnic groups and tribes often make unwise choices for where to settle (or are forced to occupy bad land) Parasites can kill plants and kill the population. Dirty water supplies can make the work force of an area sick to the point that their production suffers.
