Low level found in tradiional socieies before they become substanially inluenced by western medicine. Intermediate level exempliied by home births in us, typically atended by midwives, family, and friends tools are somewhat specialized though sill relaively simple (i. e. stethoscope for listening) High level found in the hospital obstetrics of the us where atendance by medical specialists is standard and there is a high degree of reliance on complex, specialized tools: technology and physiology. Diminishing degree of familiarity the woman has with the arifact as it becomes more specialized. Has consequences for her experience of birth and for the course of labor: technology and social interacion. Arifacts also afect the nature and low of informaion about the birth event which in turn afects social interacions. Within collaboraing group (i. e. yucatan example pg 207), the woman is always central as the object of atenion as well as the source of crucial informaion. No need for sophisicated tools or specialists to use them.
