Depressive disorders vs. bipolar disorders: depression: a low, sad state in which life seems dark and its challenges overwhelming, mania: opposite of depression, breatheless euphoria. Depressive disorders: suffer only from depression, pattern called unipolar depression, no history of mania. Bipolar disorders: experience periods of mania that alter with periods of depression. Symptoms: 8% in a year, and 19% lifetime, vary from person to person. Five areas of functioning: emotional, motivational,behavioral, cognitive, and physical: emotional symptoms, miserable, sad, empty,humiliated, anxiety,anger, etc (may lead to crying spells, motivational symptoms. Family pedigree studdies, twin studies, and molecular biology gene studies: genetic factors, biochemical factors, nonrepinephrine and serotonin, brain anatomy and brain circuits. Treatment: electroconvulsive therapy (etc): two electrodes are attached to patients head,60-140 volts of electricity , muscle relaxation and anesthetics. Less chance ofoverdose: antidepressent drugs, monoamine oxidase (mao inhibitors) slow bodies production of mao, tricyclics: accidental, three ring structure, brain stimulation, vagus nerve, transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation.
