1) What physiological changes occur as you descend through the stages (Stages 1-4) of sleep?
In stage 1, breathing and heart rate slow as muscle tension and body temp decline. Going
through 2, 3 and 4, respiration rate, heart rate, muscle tension and body temp decline.
2) What brain wave activity changes occur as you descend through the stages (Stages 1-4) of
sleep? In stage 1, alpha waves dominate EEG activity and right before you fall asleep, theta
waves are emitted.
Slow wave sleep: consists of sleep stages 3 and 4 during which low frequency delta waves
become prominent in EEG readings.
3) REM is an abbreviation for rapid eye movement.
4) What are the characteristics of the REM cycle?
a. Brain wave activity: high frequency beta waves
b. Physiological activity: irregular breathing and pulse rate; minimal body movement
c. Other unique activities: dreaming
5) What is the progression of REM cycles throughout the course of the night?
a. How frequently do they occur? 4 times a night
b. When are they most likely to occur? Later into the night
c. How long do they last? Short at first but get to 40-60 mins
6) How does REM differ for infants compared to adults? Spend more time in REM.
