Schooling- the more formal, institutionalized aspects of education. Education has been on the rise in the us. Charter schools- public schools that receive public funds, but that are not subject to the same rules and regulations as other public schools. Private schools- makes up about 1/4th of schools, and tend to be religious. Homeschooling- education is done at home, most commonly done because parents dislike the public schools or for religious reasons. There has been a significant drop to test scores in the us for math and science due to the inequality in schools against minority groups. Functionalist theory- education accomplishes functions of society, like socialization, occupational training, and social control. Industrialization- schools tend to teach socialization directly and indirectly. Occupational training- many jobs in today"s society require at least a high school diploma, but often times a college degree. Conflict theory- emphasizes how education unifies and stabilizes society.
