SOC 201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Pie Chart
Document Summary
The point of putting data (pieces of information) into a table or figure (such as a bar graph or pie chart) is to present those data clearly. Still, until you get some experience, tables and figures can be quite confusing. But this can be dangerous because the author may not have interpreted the data correctly or may have written a misleading account of those data. Usually, no matter how many pieces of information are packed into a figure or table, you can figure out what it means by following a few steps: begin by reading the title of the table or figure carefully. The title of table 5. 2 tells you that the table shows the variable median (or average) annual incomes of people in the united states. The title also reveals that the table shows the differences in the median income for people in different (variable) categories of gender, race, and educational background: determine the source of the data.
