But it is a mistake to speak of culture as if it were shared equally by every person in a particular society especially in modern societies. There are groups of people within society whose shared values, norms, beliefs, or use of material culture sets them apart from other people in that society; these groups become subcultures. Subcultures can emerge for a variety of reasons. Deeply felt shared religious beliefs can also bring subcultures into being. Members of some religious groups have practices and beliefs that set them apart from the rest of society.
