Deaf children of hearing parents harder to learn sign and integrate into society. Did not have this problem on martha"s vineyard. Most island families had family members within walking distance. Individuals in each community were fairly close and interactive with one another. Aided in the successful adjustment of deaf children. Childhood of the deaf and hearing was similar on the island. So much support and knowledge/experience with deafness. Unknown whether deaf children attended school in the 17th and 18th centuries. Evidence that many deaf individuals were at least partly literate at this time. 1817: first school for the deaf in america opened in hartford. Most deaf islanders went to study here for a few winters. All massachusetts residents who attended this school were funded by the state. Some children attended up to ten years.
