Arousal theory: right levels of stimulation. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: priority of some needs over others, responses to inner pushes. Named the behaviors/ instincts but did not explain them. Same motive, different wiring of their inherited capacities: fixed, unlearned pattern throughout species, genes predispose some species- typical behavior. Suggests physiological need creates an aroused tension state (drive) which then motivates an organism to satisfy the need. That drive pushed one to reduce the need: involves a positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior. Humans are motivated to engage in behaviors that either increase or decrease arousal levels. Low arousal levels: motivate engagement in behaviors that will increase arousal, often through curiosity, motivate engagement in behaviors that will lower arousal levels. At the base are basic physiological needs, at the peak are the highest human needs.
