CH 301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Luminous Intensity, Scientific Notation, Decimal Mark
Document Summary
Chapter 1 - introduction: matter, energy, and measurement. Chemistry the study of matter, its properties, and the changes that matter undergoes. Matter the physical material of the universe; it is anything that has mass and occupies space. Property any characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types. Chemistry also provides a background for understanding the properties of matter in terms of atoms. Atoms- the almost infinitesimally small building blocks of matter. Each element is composed of a unique kind of atom. Molecules two or more atoms are joined in specific shapes. Even apparently small differences in the composition of structure of molecules can cause profound differences in properties. There are two realms within chemistry: macroscopic realm of ordinary-sized objects and submicroscopic realm of atoms and molecules. States of matter three forms matter can take shape, liquid, solid, or gas which differ in observable properties.
