Four commonly used alternatives to research that is relied on to acquire knowledge and make decisions. Social research addresses the errors the alternatives create to reduce the misjudgment, bias and distortions. Personal experience and common sense o o o. If something has happened to us, we accept it as true. What appears to be true is an illusion, personal experiences are subjective. Can be used to mislead others through propaganda or political manipulation. Ex: women using skin cream that don"t work keep using it. Women who realize the cream doesn"t work or do work stop using it. Signifies that everyday reasoning and perceptions are imperfect and subject to o o o o error. Ex: death penalty decreases violent crimes, but is false. Occurs when believable evidence is applied to many other situations as well. Taking special notice of certain things then generalize from them. Causes overlooking certain instances or points, dismissing contradictory information to reinforce a hypothesis.
