Rain forest layers (top to bottom): emergent layer- few trees 70 meters tall, canopy- rain forest"s roof. Lianas- vines that wind their way around this maze of branches and leaves. Epiphytes- plants that live suspended on other plants and derive their nutrients and water. Where most species live: understory/shrub layer- shaded, more humid, little wind, forest oor- dank humid environment where organic debris decomposes rapidly.
