Document Summary

Passive margin- continental margin that is not a plate boundary. Continental rifts- form when forces try to pull apart a continent, forming normal faults that downdrop some fault-bounded blocks. Normal fault- downdrop a block, formina a basin that lls with sediment. Foreland basin- occurs when crust is depressed by the weight of thrust sheets. Forearc basin- in front of the arc. Pull-apart basin- strike-slip motion along several nearby faults causes the crust to pull apart. Regional subsidence- broad region drops in elevation. Oceanic trench- forms as a result of oceanic plate approaching convergent margin and exing to bend downward into inclined subduction zone. Accretionary prism- forms along upper parts of the subduction zone as sediment is contributed by the adjacent continent and scraped off the downgrading slab. Fold and thrust belt- can form behind the main mountain belts as rocks are thrust over the interior of the continent. Backarc basin- ocean basin behind the arc.
