The concord grape and its hybrids are the leading grape grown in the northeastern united. States, developed in the mid 1800s, it is vigorous and hardy. Grapes are also late spring bloomers and they blossom much later and ripen later, making it hard to grow in areas with frost for many cultivars. Disease resistant cultivars are important in warm, humid climates where diseases are the most common. Late fruiting cultivars are less likely to be eaten by birds because many will have begun migrating by the time fruit is growing. Cultivars are typically suited for a specific use of the grape, from eating fresh, winemaking, juicing or making jelly. Being vines, grapes require support when they are laden with fruit and a guide for training the vines and making pruning easier. Should be placed in well-draining soil with good airflow, in a warm pocket such as by a building if in a cold climate.
