With the spread of secondary schools during early 20th century, adolescents were in effect barred from labor force. Increased affluence of americans after wwii increased free time for adolescents: advertisers directed markets toward teens. Patterns of time use in contemporary america: study conducted in late 1970s and in 2000. Significant decline in proportion of time devoted to paid jobs and significant increase in time devoted to leisure. Time devoted to housework dropped among boys: 2000. Average teen girl spends more than 6 hours a day in leisure activity. Average teen boy spent more than 7 hours a day in leisure activity. Both girls and boys spend huge amounts of free time in passive activities: several distinct groups. Busy group: spent considerable time in range of pursuits. Busy but did not have paying job. Devoted substantial time to paying job but spent little time on other activities.
