Research on identity development: determining an adolescent"s identity status. Individuals are assigned to one of 4 identity states. Identity achievement: individual has established coherent sense of identity: moratorium: individual is in the midst of a period of exploration. Identity foreclosure: individual has made commitments but without a period of exploration.
