Historicism - social and cultural phenomena arise historically - they are not constant. Symbolic interactionism - meaning is made by social interaction - nothing is given - race is not natural. Social constructionism - social realities determine our ideas and our behavior - we make race-> race makes us. There are legal restrictions against the minority group. Anti-miscegenation laws and obsession with racial purity. It comes out of prevailing modes of thought. It is a means to work out a crisis of identity on part of dominant group. It comes from economic tensions and nationalist identity.
