SOC 3104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Alexis De Tocqueville
Document Summary
All men are created equal and have the capacity for reason. They may enter into a social contract, creating a community and giving power to some over others. They may also choose not to enter into a social contract, leaving them in the state of nature. One man can only do so much on his own in production. Specialization in tasks allows people to become experts in one piece of production which increases speed and efficiency of production. Only humans have the capacity for division of labor and specialization. Not actually true because though humans are the only ones who consciously do this, several species have evolutionary traits that specialize them to be able to do certain tasks ex. bees, ants, wolves. People strive to make the most profit and you have to allow them to do that, while not letting their need for profit overtake yours.
