PSY 220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Stimulus Control, Classical Conditioning, Little Albert Experiment
Document Summary
Stimulus discrimination - differential responding in the presence of two or more stimuli. Stimulus generalization- responding to test stimuli that are different from the cues that were present during training. Pavlov noticed the dogs has the same cs for different other, similar stimuli. Little albert all white, fluffy stimuli. Stimulus generalization gradient - a gradient of responding that is observed if participants are tested with stimuli that increasingly differ from the stimulus that was present during training. Antecedent stimulus - cues an organism to perform a learned behavior. When an organism perceives an antecedent stimulus, it behaves in a way that maximizes reinforcing consequences and minimizes punishing consequences. Overshadowing- interference with the conditioning of a stimulus because of the simultaneous presence of another stimulus that is easier to condition. When a child is learning to read, the pictures (easier to learn) may overshadow the words. Memorize story based on pictures, not reading. Stimulus elements versus configural cues in compound stimuli.
