PSYC 460 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Reinforcement, Animal Training, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Procedure nonreinforcement of a previously reinforced response. A response can be fully extinguished or partially extinguish (behavior still occurs at lower frequency) Extinction = nonreinforcement of a previously reinforced response, the result of which is a decrease in the strength of that response. Resistance to extinction = the extent to which responding persists after an extinction procedure has been implemented. Extinction burst = a temporary increase in the frequency and intensity of responding when extinction is first implemented. Resurgence = reappearance during extinction of other behaviors that had once been effective in obtaining reinforcement. Resembles regression (the reappearance of immature behavior in reaction to frustration or conflict) High resistance to extinction very persistent response. Low resistance to extinction response disappears quickly. The more reinforcers an individual has received for a behavior, the greater resistance to extinction. Easier to extinguish an unwanted behavior when it first becomes evident.
