PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Optic Nerve, Far-Sightedness, Electromagnetic Spectrum
Document Summary
Sensation: detect stimuli- process of receiving, converting, and transmitting raw sensory information from external and internal environments to brain. (different from text) Perception- interpret stimuli- process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting sensory information. (different from text) Sensation: you see the black and white color. Perception: the pictures/ concepts behind the color. Strong enough to activate sensory receptors, but not to be consciously aware of them. Receptors (organs) : detect stimulus from environment. After detection: (we are not consciously aware of this) Transduction: converts sensory stimuli into neural impulse (brain language) Coding: converts neural impulses to specific sensation (visual, touch, etc) to different parts of brain (parietal, occipital, etc. ) Sensory reduction (during transduction/coding): filters and analyzes incoming sensation; which information to pass to brain. Absolute threshold: smallest amount of stimulus that can be detected (hearing/eye exams) Ex: some people can hear sound that other can"t.
