Cities become identified with the industry (detroit, pittsburgh, chicago) City dominated the nation"s social, economic and cultural life. Men could hope to inherit the family farm but young women moved. Immigrants before the civil war moved to the countryside, this changed afterward. Men usually outnumbered women-yet single women leave the rural areas and farms. Cities encouraged the creation of many buildings- tenements to apartments. Included commercial offices and efficient public services. Dumbbell buildings in ny were cramped quarters. Fires allowed city planners to start from fresh- this led to the skyscraper and steel. Mass transport allowed cities to grow bigger in acreage- 1904 nyc subway. Electric trolley eliminated the tons of waste from horse cars.
