Men could hope to inherit the family farm but young women moved. Immigrants before the civil war moved to the countryside, this changed afterward. Men usually outnumbered women-yet single women leave the rural areas and farms. Cities encouraged the creation of many buildings- tenements to apartments. Included commercial offices and efficient public services. Dumbbell buildings in ny were cramped quarters. Fires allowed city planners to start from fresh- this led to the skyscraper and steel. Mass transport allowed cities to grow bigger in acreage- 1904 nyc subway. Electric trolley eliminated the tons of waste from horse cars.
