Considered one of the most debilitating disorders. Typically do not see a complete restoration. Interferes with functioning in a variety of contexts (social, vocational, etc. ) Females - a little bit after males. When they go through menopause, they could experience a sudden onset of schizophrenic symptoms. Moderate to severe impairment from dx - death. 25% some reduction but still need support. Typical course is relatively stable functioning with discrete periods of exacerbation. 2 or more of the following, each present for a significant portion of the time during a one-month period (or less if treated successfully). 3) disorganized speech (such as frequent derailment or incoherence) 5) negative symptoms (such as affective flattening, alogia, or avolition) Duration: continuous signs of the disturbance persists for at least 6 months. Not attributable to another medical or psychiatric condition. Must make sure symptoms are not attributable to substance use. The addition of abnormal experiences/behaviors, like hallucinations or delusions.
