Document Summary

Meant there was an outpouring of reading material. 60/80% of population could read- higher than anywhere else. Every different group had their own version of newspaper to send out. Before, newspapers were traditionally 6 pages long, huge piece of paper. People paid 6 cents per paper were subscription. Penny press newspaper was very small, could be read anywhere, only costed 1 penny. Was so important because it created a space where everyone could debate. In large city, people were afriad of crime. Influx of immigrants, 1840s most were poor single catholic irish immigrants. People were afraid that catholics would follow pope, not community. Political parties- began in 1824 when andrew jackson lost election even though he won majority vote. Votes at polling place were not private until late 19th century. Lot of pressure to vote like everyone else. Felt like they could do what they wanted, took over city streets.
