Document Summary

: individual behavior is shaped by social forces and situational contingencies. It is easy to think these institutions would exist still without people, but we each have a role to play in maintaining or changing these social institutions. Globalization: the process through which people"s lives all around the world become increasingly interconnected. If an aspect of social life does not contribute to society"s survival, it will eventually disappear. O"brien, shared meaning as the basis of humanness: Symbolic interactionists are interested in the process of assigning meaning to actions and in the responses that follow. Rather than responding to the physical environment, humans impose symbolic interpretations on experiences and draw conclusions based on these interpretations.
