Waves Of US Feminism
Feminism has came in three waves each having different issues to address and women who
support the movement.
1st Wave
Issues: Right to Vote, Abolition of slavery, Marriage rights(Women were property of husband),
Access to education and employment, reproductive rights.
Important people: Mary Wellstone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone, Susan B.
Anthony, Sojourner Truth.
Feminist of color: Maria Stewart, Ida B Wells.
2nd Wave
Dates: 1960-1970’s
Issues: Access to employment, reproductive and health right, pay gap, sexual harassment. At
this time it was ok to hire a female based on her looks. Women could not get credit without her
husbands permission.
Important People: Gloria Steinam.
3rd Wave
Dates: 1990’s to current
Issues: Women health, women employment/pay gap,
Important people: bell hooks, Rebecca Walkers.
Types Of Feminism
Liberal Feminism
Assumptions: Women are rational, women are capable of economic and political self
determination, women should have access to education and employment opportunities.
How does change happen?
-Create access and opportunities through the systems that are already there.
-Through education
-Through US courts
Radical Feminism
Assumptions:Western thought and western culture are male dominated. Women are aligned
with all “Devalued” pairs in western thoughts.
