Martin charcot (hypnotist) helped freud discover the possible sexual basis of. 1896 freud concedes that sexual conflicts were the primary causes of all neuroses. He connected childhood sexual abuse to adult neuroticism. Freud retracted his theory about a year after he established it, stating that the patients were only imagining the sexual abuse they were experiencing. Masson, who stated that freud only stated that the sexual abuse was fantasy because his ideas would be more widely accepted.
