Motivation - psychological processes that arouse and direct goal-directed behavior. Rewards: extrinsic rewards satisfaction in the payoff from others. It is (external) reward others give you for doing something. It is the internal satisfaction in completing a task. Major perspectives on motivation: (1) content, (2) process, (3) job design, and (4) reinforcement: content perspectives (need-based perspectives) - find the needs that motivate people. Needs - physiological or psychological deficiencies that cause a behavior: maslow"s hierarchy of needs theory: 1: mcgregor"s theory x/theory y, mcclelland"s acquired needs theory: believes that our needs are learned and not born with it. Need for institutional power problem solving for organization (positive: deci and ryan"s self-determination theory: assumes that people are driven to grow and influenced by innate (inborn) needs. Intrinsic motivation and rewards (such as feeling independent) last longer and has a more positive impact on task performance.
