CRJ 308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Forensic Science
Document Summary
Hirschi was one of the people to put control theory on the map. He contributed to how we can empirically test theory. In hirschi"s causes of delinquency he not only set forth this control theory and tested it, but said why the other two types of theory dint work. He showed that theories could be tested and the value of using objective measures in social science research. Most theories until this point were simple, in that they weren"t really tested. For strain, the motivation is negative social relations, for learning theory it is the positive association with crime. Society puts controls on people, and those who commit crime don"t conform to those societal restrictions. He says that people do not commit crime because of the social bond between a person and society. Delinquency and social nods are inversely related; the more there is of one, the less there is of other.
