Document Summary

Mitosis and cytokinesis only takes about one hour. The rest of the time is spent in interphase. Three sub phases of interphase: g1, s, g2. There is an arrested phase called g0 after g1 if a cell has exited the cell cycle (nerve cells in the central nervous system and muscle cells) Stem cells are cells that constantly go through the cell cycle. Liver cells are cells that are in the arrested phase but can be called back to the cell cycle. Two ways to get stem cells: 1. embryotic stem cells from human embryos (let an embryo develop to an early stage. They still have the ability to become any sort of cell needed, they need to be genetically engineered to match a person"s specific immune system)/ 2. Adult stem cells: femur cells are adult stem cells/ skin cells that create new skin cells (they are not as flexible- they can only create one type of cell).
