In old imperialism, many often did not go further into islands. Also, europeans allowed the colonies to govern themselves rather than controlling colonial life. Technological advances were key to the shift between old and new imperialism. In old, wood and stone were used compared to the new where it was replaced with iron and steel. Iron and steel boats lasted much longer, had a greater sailing capacity, and had more room for travelers/weapons. Made possible to explore further into colonial land. Suez canal (isthmus of suez): located in egypt. Cuts a channel to the eat of egypt allowing european ships to explore pass africa from the north. Hiram maxim: invented the maxim gun in 1884. Matabele uprising: a rebellion in present day zimbabwe between british and natives of the land. Quickly died down due to the superiority of the maxim guns.
