Document Summary

Chemical basis of life: water, acids, and bases. Ability of an atom to attract electrons in a bond away from another atom. Non-polar no difference in charge throughout the molecule. Weak interaction between kind of positive & kind of negative portions o molecule. Freezing is different in water than most substances. Most substances get smaller (more dense as they freeze) Water gets larger (less dense due to the hydrogen bonds) It can dissolve both charged things as well as other polar things. Solute: anything that can dissolve in a liquid. Solvent: the liquid in which things can be dissolved. Since we are using water this is an aqueous solution. Nacl -> held together by an ionic bond. When that ionic bond in nacl breaks, it leaves behind charged ions. Water molecules are attracted to the charges of na & cl. Molecules can be classified by their ability to dissolve in water or not.
