Contact points between the plasma membrane of tissue cells. Two or more cells that need to collaborate to do a function. Cells arranged in sheets of 1 or more layers. Functions: : selective barrier of transferring substances in and out, secretes products made by cells into the free surfaces, protective surface resisting abrasive influences by fast cell division, forms special organs w/ nervous tissue. Faces the surface, cavity, lumen or duct. Face adjacent cells on either side w/ different junctions: basal surface. Deepest layer and touches the basement membrane via hemidesmosomes. Basement membrane: : thin extracellular layer made of the basal lamina (attach epithelial cells to basement) and reticular lamina (closer to connective tissue, functions: Attach to epithelial tissue, resist passage of large molecules between epithelial and connective tissue, and filter blood: epithelium basement membrane (basal -> reticular lamina) connective. Two types: covering and lining epithelium. Inner lining of vessles, cavities and systems: glandular epithelium.
