Robert hooke discovered cells in cork in 1660. 200 years later cells were re-discovered in animals. Flower color in garden peas uncovered basis for human genetics . Transposable dna elements insert into genes and inactivate them. 1950 = by studying corn kernels of different colors she hypothesized the theory of transposable elements before the structure of dna were discovered. Wild type = pigmented that made it purple = c gene. C-m(ds) [no ac] = ds = dna transposon inserted into c gene with no more purple color. C-m(ac) + c-m(ds) (+ac) = ac encodes dna transposase that enables ds to jump out of c gene in somatic cells, restoring gene c function and purple color.
