Feuding was used in attempts to settle disputes. Lynching of blacks by whites mobs was used to repress blacks during reconstruction. Poverty led to a rise in gangs organized for robbery and murder, including former. The eastern press romanticized these gangs: weak law enforcement allowed them to proliferate o o o. Liquor was favored because beer was bulky and needed refrigeration to keep from spoiling: we changed from a beer drinking country to a liquor drinking country o. Toxic forms of the unregulated alcohol were consumed causing paralysis, blindness, and death. Illicit alcohol was a major source of revenue for criminal gangs. The objective tasks of production, distribution and sale are a complex set of interrelated tasks. Increased costs must be pass on to consumption.
