KN 252 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Posterior Interventricular Sulcus, Interatrial Septum, Interventricular Septum
Document Summary
The heart is located in the mediastinum of the thorax medial cavity of thorax. It lies superior to the diaphragm, intermediate the spine and costal cartilages, and bounded between the lungs. Within the mediastinum, the heart is protected by the pericardium a double walled sac. The pericardium is made up of two coverings: fibrous pericardium loosely fitting superficial part of pericardium. Prevents overfilling the heart with blood: serous pericardium thin, slippery, two layer serous membrane that forms a closed sac around the heart (deep to fibrous pericardium) Parietal layer lines the internal surface of fibrous pericardium. The heart has 2 superior atria and 2 inferior ventricles. The partition that separates the atria internally is the interatrial septum. The internal partition that separates the ventricles is the interventricular septum. The anterior interventricular sulcus marks the anterior position of the septum separating the l and r ventricles.
