Chapter 24: amino acid anabolism (could be nitrogen anabolism) #2 animals get their nitrogen from dietary amino acids, but plants get it from ammonia as well and some few bacteria fix it from atmospheric nitrogen. A few other sources, but compared to the amount of nitrogen we get from dietary amino acids, the others aren"t as much. Plants can get nitrogen from amino acids from ammonia and urea. #3 biological n. nitrogen becomes biologically available when bacteria trap it from the atmosphere. The nitrogen-fixing bacteria like those in legumes (some are also in the ocean). Legumes create a spot, a rhizome, where the bacteria likes to live. They do what none of us could do before the 20th century, they fix nitrogen gas into ammonia. Before this, almost all nitrogen came into the biosphere from lightening strikes. Chemistry changed this, so that humans could also do nitrogen-fixation.
