PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Chromosome Abnormality, Allosome, Surrogacy
Document Summary
Artificial insemination- woman acquires frozen sperm and it"s physically inserted. Test tube- extract egg and sperm, put in petri dish, and then artificially inseminated. Surrogacy- third party has a child, often with the male"s semen of a couple. Egg and sperm are half chromosomes from mom and half from dad, but that doesn"t mean half traits. Traits are determined by dominant/recessive quality of genes. Sex of child: sperm determines sex since egg always produces x and sperm can be x or y. Leads to more boy conceptions and sex-linked recessive traits in males. Multifactorial transmission- expression often due to interaction of genes and environment (psychosis). Heritability- statistic about how strong the genetics factor is in the expression of a trait. 48% identical twins reared apart end up also developing a trait. Reaction range- there is an ultimate limit to the expression. No humans are 12" tall, none 2 tall. Many more are conceived but most miscarried.
