PSY 303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Pomegranate, German Shepherd, Spatula
Document Summary
How do we decide if an objects represents a specific category( dog, bird, vehicle, etc) Ex: has feathers has wings can fly . Exemplar based categories: collection of representations of many individual examples of category: Dog: german shepherd, yellow lab, sarkey (fewer) When encounter new objects then compare it to the examples of the categories you already have. The more similar object is some/many of categories representations quickly. Family resemblance approach: instead of definition members are going to share a number of same qualities but not all qualities( ex: have wings, fly, have feathers but some have wings and fly but don"t have feathers) Exemplar based categories collection of representations od manu individual examples of category. One representation mental average of composite of individual examples. Prototype doesn"t have to perfectly match object just needs to be more similar than any there categories prototype. Prototype is mental average (mental creation doesn"t have to be actual instance of a dog)
