PSY 303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Cognitive Load, Phoneme, Speech Perception
Document Summary
In order to comprehend sentences we need to be able to hold words in working memory to avoid back tracking. If slow word recognition then other stages (comprehending) suffers. Speech perception should be harder to learn. Cant backtrack because you cant go back and check unless you ask for repetition. Just need exposure to speech but no instruction needed. Must learn grapheme-phoneme correspondence (letters to sounds correspondence) F sound can be obtained by: cough, graph, leaf, tough. But through, dough does not follow this it is not pronounced though or douf. Many exception words: mint, lint, tent, hint, pint. Phonological awareness needed in order to learn words that are made up of separate phonemes. It is not pronounced one by one the letters are overlapped (phonemes overlapped in teach) Phonological awareness needs to be though first. Results in better reading skills in later grades. Training children in sounding out written words for beginning readers (1st,2nd grade)
