Introns = intervening sequences which do not encode functional proteins. During translation, a cell reads the information in a messenger rna (mrna) and uses it to build a protein. In an mrna, the instructions for building a polypeptide are encoded in the rna nucleotides (a, u, c, and g bases) read in groups of three (codons).
