HST 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Intolerable Acts
Document Summary
There was no speak or thought of revolution in 1763. Colonists were proud britians at this point in time. Just 13 years later they are fighting for independence which shows how quickly things escalate between mother country and the colonies. Fighting the french gave the colonies and britain a common enemy to bring them together but without the french involved there was nothing keeping them together. The british debt more than doubled (73m to 170m) after the 7 years war which caused them to squeeze the colonies for money and created tensions. The taxes that the british imposed weren"t unreasonable comparing the. 26 shillings that british citizens in london paid to the 1 shilling that the colonists paid a year in taxes. Colonists freaked out that they had no say on what they were taxed on (no taxation without representation)
