Document Summary

Tolerance and addiction in substance use disorders pt 1. A drug"s overall effect depends on its biological effect and the user"s expectations. Variations occur with different social and cultural contexts. Psychoactive drug: chemicals that alter the brain, producing changes in perceptions and moods. Tolerance: a condition that occurs when the body gets used to a medicine so that either more medicine is needed or different medicine is needed. (neural adaptation) Severity varies from mild to moderate to severe. Behavior addiction: psychologists try to avoid using addiction to label driven, excessive behaviors such as eating, work, sex, and accumulating wealth. Addictions: caused by ever-increased doses of most psychoactive drugs(including prescription painkillers) Prompts the users to crave the drug, to continue use despite adverse consequences, and to struggle when attempting withdrawal. All do their work at the brain synapses. Stimulate, inhibit, or mimic the activity of the brain"s own chemical messengers, the neurotransmitters. Depressants: calm neural activity and slow body functions.
