BUS 130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Henrik Ibsen, Extreme Measures, Critical Discourse Analysis
Document Summary
Henrik ibsen"s "hedda gabler" is a problem play that explores the societal challenges a newlywed lady experiences upon returning to her village after a honeymoon. Hedda has been so disheartened by the poor expectations she has for her future because she is female and of advanced age that she has resorted to criticizing everyone around her. When hedda gives in to her jealousy, hedda causes problems not just for herself but for everyone around her as well. Since she was a woman with few rights at the time the play was written, hedda had to conform to the norms of the period. She was intimidated by those who seemed unfazed by a little scandal. Hedda"s hatred and jealousy against those who are free to make decisions about their own life drove her to take manipulative action and try to end the lives of others. She did these terrible deeds because she needed power and control over her life.
